Before it was demolished, the Robert Taylor Homes was one of America's largest Housing Developments. Nestled five miles from downtown Chicago, and divided from the rest of city by an expressway and electrical rail system, there were many stories of crime and mayhem and general disdain for the apartment complex and those who lived there. Brenda Costanzo writes her story of being a resident and telling raw and gritty anecdotes from a first-person perspective about what life was like living in Robert Taylor. Her memoir is a testimony of survival and overcoming the odds.

Author Brenda Costanzo's memoir living in the Robert Taylor Homes is a heart wrenching tale of her young life as she lived in what was known as one of the infamous housing ghettos in the United States. She is very honest and sincere as she writes about her daily life to survive the rival gangs, drugs, guns and loss of friends and family.

She debunks many of the urban legend, myths and misconceptions of life living among gangs and a government that refused to acknowledge its worse mistake until it was too late.

I would recommend this book it is a very good read.

I did find many grammar and punctuation errors not related to the authors disclaimer. However, I did not find them to interrupt my reading.

A tragic tale and yet a celebration of overcoming. Well done, Brenda.
Hi Brenda I am really enjoying your book. I'm sure it was painful to write at times but so important for people to understand. Thank you for writing it! Will you be coming out with a kindle version?
I am still reading the book, and it's VERY interesting so far, I give it 2 Thumbs UP 5 Stars
This book needs to be made into a movie.
As a young kid in the 70's, I remember driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway and seeing the Robert Taylor Homes alongside the highway. Even then, I wondered about them, because the seemed to go on forever, (really for about two miles), and looked foreboding. I read the book, Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh recently. It took place in the RTH, and showed a view of gang culture in the public housing community. It was interesting. When I came across this title, I was curious about the author's experience of growing up there. The thing that I found most interesting was the both good and bad that was a part of growing up there. The gangs were a big part of her experience, and part of many of her more violent recollections. They could also be helpful within the community too though. Although helpful at times, my impression is that the gangs mostly held their own members down, as well as people in their community by creating a culture of violence and fear. But, the resident communities learned to coexist with the gangs as peacefully as possible, since police and the CHA was of no real help. Along those same lines, people living there were a fairly tight community that could be very resourceful getting what they needed to get by each month. It left me wondering what makes the difference between someone who lives there, but aspires for more and someone who just makes decisions that keep them trapped in poverty with fewer options. This author took her challenges and made herself stronger from them. She put the hard work in to get an education and give herself more opportunities. What makes the difference between her and others who stay stuck in multi generationall poverty? Was it her intact family? The fact that both of her parents worked and set down rules for her? Her own inner resolve? I would imagine all of the above helped. This was a very thought provoking read.
