Dr. Rick Bommelje (BOMB-L-J) referred to as the "Listening Coach" or the "Listening Doctor" released his second book Listening Pays. Dr. Bommelje co-authored with Dr. Lyman Steil the pioneering and award-winning book Listening Leaders The Ten Golden Rules to Listen, Lead, and Succeed.
Listening Pays uses the writing genre of storytelling with a true-to-life story, characters you can relate to, and a message that is interwoven in the fabric of successful leadership and the power of listening. The story engages readers through connection with the characters, as well as those who play the part of an observer from a balcony. Rick refers to this perspective as "Get on the Balcony."
When on the balcony, a leader observes what he sees or hears NOW, and detects patterns and trends that either helps or hinders what is going on, affecting the business. This practice is what Dr. Rick calls, "Sensing" the message. My review of Listening Pays is that of an observer.

This book is a blah blahhh "and then he lifted his leg to walk" this book bites. It's all transaction empty filler. GARBAGE. Don't waste your money on this, if you want to learn something. If you are interested in learning how to listen better, you must be a goal oriented person- and this book is just a waste of time, counter productive to the title; semi ironic.
I bought this book because it was required for my college class…coincidentally the class is taught by Bommelje. While the purpose is noble and I agree whole-heartedly in principle, in practice this is a poorly written book that only exists to promote Bommelje's Listening seminars which he uses to make a lucrative living. Save your money and let me summarize it for you… Sit quietly and let the other person talk for a while. If you're not interested in listening say so and if you have a question ask it. Bang! You're done! Now isn't that better?

Great book. I highly recommend this for employers as well as employees.
This is a self-development book that ultimately engages the reader to take action. The "six strategies" give me a road map to enhance my listening skills and to help me identifying my strengths and weaknesses. Those strategies are cleverly incorporated into a story which anyone can probably relate to, at one point or another. The narrative itself makes it easy to remember the listening strategies. As a leader, I highly recommend this book no matter what your position in life is.
I truly wish he'd just have spelled out the components of his listening theory and ditched the ridiculous story. Who wants to wade through a cheesy story to get to the heart-of-the-matter? Not me! A book stating his theory with information substantiating how the theory came into being and can be practiced would have been far better.
